Life Passages: Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals
We are delighted to work with members and friends of Ascension at key moments in your life as you celebrate major faith milestones of baptism into the church, preparing for marriage, or the proclamation of new life in a funeral or memorial service where we desire to provide comfort and care for you. The course of Christian life is marked by a variety of passages, although the primary passage is made in the waters of baptism. Once a life of faith is begun through Holy Baptism, no subsequent passage is made alone. From baptism onward, all the times and occasions of life are accompanied by the presence of God who is made known to us through Jesus Christ and by the community of faith that He creates for us.
In baptism, God freely gives His grace to us. It is in baptism that people become members of Christ’s body here on earth. Baptism is the beginning of a person’s faith journey. Lutherans trust that in Holy baptism God delivers us from the forces of evil, puts our sinful self to death, gives us new birth, adopts us as children, and makes us members of the body of Christ, the church. To schedule a baptism, please contact Pastor Jim Peper by calling the church office at 912-232-4151. We will work with you to schedule a date that will be convenient for your family. Baptisms for all ages can be scheduled during the 10:00 am service.
As our historic sanctuary is currently under restoration and closed to the public, we are unable to schedule weddings for the first six months of 2018. If you may be interested in having your wedding at Ascension later in the year, please contact Stephanie Miller in the church office at 912-232-4151 to inquire about reserving a date.
With all of its genuine warmth and charm, Savannah is one of the most popular destination cities for weddings, and Ascension is one of the few churches in the Historic District that permits non-member ceremonies. Located on beautiful Wright Square – just two blocks away from River Street – consider Ascension for your wedding.

Losing a loved one is a difficult experience but we, as a congregation at Ascension, desire to walk with one another in times of sorrow and grief. Although scheduling a funeral in the sanctuary is not possible at this time, please contact Pastor Peper by calling the church office at 912-232-4151 so that he and others in the church will be able to minister to your family’s need. At a person’s death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn and remembers the brevity of life on earth. At the funeral we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. During the funeral or memorial service, our loved ones will be remembered as a child of God and we will celebrate what Jesus Christ has done for each of us in His promise of eternity and life everlasting. Trusting in God’s promises in baptism that we are claimed by Christ forever, we rest in the sure hope of the resurrection. When the church gathers to mark the end of life, Christ crucified and risen is the witness of worship, the strength of mutual consolation, and the hope of healing.
