Beginning October 8 our 10:00 a.m. worship service and 9:00 a.m. Sunday School will be held at Mickve Israel Synagogue. Childcare available.
Located at 120 Bull Street on historic Wright Square in Savannah, Georgia, the sanctuary building was completed in 1879. On April 14, 2016, the 275th Anniversary of the founding of the congregation was commemorated in an evening prayer service followed by a 3-day visit by Brother Christian Priesmeier, 14th generation descendant of Martin Luther and brother of Amelungsborn Monastery in Germany. A festival service of worship was held on April 17, with the Rev. H. Julian Gordy, Bishop of the Southeastern Synod, ELCA, officiating. Members and guests from around the region enjoyed a celebration luncheon featuring special music and a keynote address by Brother Priesmeier. Expanding on the vision of the congregation, ’We are a Christ-centered community serving from the Heart of Savannah,’ Ascension marked another historic milestone in 2016 with the opening of Our Daily Bread Café, located at 6 E. State Street, diagonally across Wright Square from the church. Open to the public Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, local residents, workers, students and guests from around the globe break fresh-baked bread together in a faith-based setting. During the evening and on Sundays, the café serves as a nexus for outreach and meaningful dialogue, hosting small group meetings, special events and educational programs including a weekly ecumenical bible study. As part of the December Wright Square Open House festivities, children and their families were treated to storytelling by candlelight and caroling with Santa in the café. The historic sanctuary, located on the second floor of the Bull Street building, is currently undergoing restoration and Crumley Hall, our ground floor fellowship space, is being renovated. At the current time our Sunday worship services and education classes are being held at Congregation Mickve Israel on Monterey Square. Once restoration work is complete, services will return to the sanctuary, and the sanctuary will again be open to the public at specific times during the week for self-guided tours and personal reflection.
