Serving from the Heart

Serving From the Heart

“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.”  Matthew 25: 35-36, 40.

“Serving from the Heart of Savannah” is the vision statement for Ascension’s ministry.  Ascension’s members have a long history of both serving the impoverished and hungry and advocating on behalf of “the least of these.”  (Matthew 25:45)  We serve in many different ways and through different programs.  Join with us here at Ascension as we change the world!

Grace Ministry: Leaders of this ministry and other Ascension members meet each Sunday morning at the church between 8:00 and 8:30 to have coffee and fellowship with individuals experiencing homelessness in Savannah. Anyone interested in supporting this volunteer ministry is encouraged to participate. Through the week volunteers are needed to prepare bagged lunches including sandwiches, and to assemble hygiene kits and organize other donated items which are made available to the guests.

ELCA World Hunger Appeal: The ELCA World Hunger Appeal responds to hunger and poverty in the US and around the world by addressing root causes.  Through a comprehensive program of relief, development, education and advocacy people are connected to the resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty.  Between 70-75% of ELCA World Hunger funds are spent internationally and 20-25% are spent domestically.  ELCA World Hunger Appeal responds to Christ’s call to “Go and do likewise.”  (Luke 10:37), serving with compassion people who are most vulnerable, paying focused attention to the full participation of women and the needs of children.  Many members from Ascension contribute to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal throughout the year.
