Meet the Staff
The Rev. Dr. Richard R. Campbell, Sr., Interim Pastor
Born in Pennsylvania, Pastor Campbell grew up in Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina, making him a “dyed-in-the-wool” southerner by rearing. He holds a bachelors degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University, a Master of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Lenoir-Rhyne. Pastor Campbell served Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC, as associate pastor, and was pastor of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Durham, NC, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC. He was Minister of Parish Life and Assistant to the Bishop for the North Carolina Synod, LCA, before becoming Senior Pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC. Pastor Campbell and his wife, Becky, have two sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren.
Since retiring from parish ministry in 2004, Pastor Campbell has served as a congregational relationship manager for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, interim director of St. Matthew’s Community Outreach Center in Charleston, and interim senior pastor of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia. In his various places of ministry he served on youth ministry, evangelism, professional leadership, and parish life and ministry development committees; and was a member of the Division for Congregational Ministries board for the ELCA in Chicago. He recently completed twelve years on the board of trustees for Lutheran Homes of South Carolina. He is a former Jaycee, Rotarian and member of the Exchange Club of Charleston.
Dr. Brian J. Taylor, Organist and Choirmaster
Having served as a church musician for over 30 years, Dr. Brian J. Taylor has served Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, New Jersey and Michigan. He holds the Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College; the Master of Divinity degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary; the Master of Music and the Master of Sacred Music degrees from Southern Methodist University; and the Doctor of Sacred Music degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation, where he serves as part-time Professor of Sacred Music through online teaching. Brian has two daughters, ages 12 and 20, who currently live in Savannah.
Stephanie Miller, Congregational Coordinator
Stephanie is a native of the Hostess City and “wouldn’t have it any other way.” She’s been married to Charlie for over 40 years, and together they have two sons, one married to a wonderful woman and runs a successful vacation business on the waterfront and another who just started his career as a professional baseball player. Stephanie helps fulfill the mission of the church by coordinating congregational life from births, baptisms, wedding and anniversaries to making sure your gifts are welcomed and recorded. She has a deep passion for her family and her faith, that she shares with all she meets!
Willie Tomat, Sexton
Willie, friend to all and caretaker for Ascension’s buildings and the people within them, was born and raised in Savannah. He became a member of Ascension 20 years ago, and has been serving as the church sexton for 11. He loves to read, loves animals, and “loves working at Ascension.” In a feature article from the Savannah Morning News about Willie, he was described as “the guiding light” for the Sunday morning fellowship and, along with fellow members, created Grace Ministry at Ascension, providing ongoing support for the homeless.
